Install Joomla 1.5 on Hostmonster
***Please note, This article is now pretty much redundant, instead read this article on how you can install Joomla on a Hostmonster account with Simple Scripts in a matter of minutes!
At time of wrighting Joomla 1.5 installed and runs perfectly using this method, however I failed to get Joomla 1.5.1 to work perfectly (it installed ok, but uploading the templates never worked).
Here's how to install Joomla 1.5 on Hostmonster. If you don't use Hostmonster for your Joomla hosting you should. During my first attempt to install Joomla 1.5 using Hostmonster I encountered a number of database related problems and used the Hostmonster live chat support 5 times. Every time the staff at Hostmonster correctly diagnosed the error from the information the Joomla 1.5 installer gave, and provided me with the solution immediately. Hostmonster is great.
If you have a Hostmonster account then this will help you install Joomla 1.5 hustle free. If you were looking then, here are the official Joomla 1.5 installation instructions.
Installing Joomla 1.5 on a Hostmonster account is e-e-easy (once you know How)
**Note at time of writing, (Feb.03.2008) Joomla 1.5 cannot be installed through fantastico de lux. I recommend checking in cPanel (for the smiley face) - fantastico de lux. Once fantastico has been updated, it would be easier/faster to install Joomla 1.5 through fantastico. To install Joomla 1.5 normally on Hostmonster (web installation) carry on.
To start with you need to download Joomla 1.5 (here) (you'll most often want the .zip file)
Then you need to unzip the file and upload it to the directory where you want Joomla 1.5 installed.
If it is your only domain or your main domain, then you will need to upload it into your public_html folder: /home/username/public_html
For example if the domain was www.youtukan.com then the directory to upload the Joomla 1.5 install files will be /home/youtukan/public_html (with Hostmonster the user name is usually the first 8 letters of you main domain)
If you have a number of domain names then you will might want to upload it to one of you other domains (not the main one). Hostmonster calls these "addon"'s and the path to your addon folder would be /home/user/public_html/addon-domain
So if I had another domain called, say www.yahoo.com then in that would appear (like the sample above) /home/youtukan/public_html/yahoo
Once you have uploaded all the Joomla 1.5 install files into the right directory, then you are ready to create the database for your site. This should be done before you start the Joomla 1.5 installation process. If you you start installing Joomla 1.5 before you set up the database, while you are doing so the Joomla 1.5 installer might time out (if you spend too long setting up the database in another window) it will then give you an error about cookies not being enabled.
If you get the error that cookies aren't enabled during the Joomla 1.5 install then it just might be that the Joomla 1.5 installer has be inactive for too long. Thats why its better to be prepared before you start.
It goes without saying you must have cookies enabled on your browser for the Joomla 1.5 web based installation to work.
To set up the database ready for installing Joomla 1.5 log on to cPanel of you host monster account, and scroll down to the section heading databases and click on the MySQL Database icon.
Enter a name for you database. This can be anything you like (but I would avoid non standard characters). Probably best to simple use the name of your site.
After the database has been created, go down to where it says MySQL users and add a new user. It's better to make a new user than to use the same name and password you use to login to Hostmonster.
Now the new user has been created. Go to Add User to Database. Choose the user you just created and the database you just created. IMPORTANT during the Joomla 1.5 install you will be asked for this information, notice that your Hostmonster user name and an underscore ( _ ) have been added to the start of the user name and database name. Make a note of both names exactly as they appear here.
Now click on submit button which will bring up MySQL Account Maintenance. Check the box called ALL PRIVILEGES (which will put a tick in all the other boxes) and click the button make changes.
You are now ready to start the Joomla 1.5 Install. To do this simply go to the URL of the website you are installing Joomla 1.5 to. Eg www.your-new-joomlasite.com
The Joomla 1.5 installer will start automatically. If it doesn't then you probably haven't uploaded the files from the zip you downloaded properly.
If all goes well you will be greeted with the first Joomla 1.5 installation page. If you reading this, you probably want the language set to English, if not change it here.
Your using Hostmonster to install Joomla 1.5 so all the requirements listed her will be green (as in good), click next.
If this is the first time you have ever seen the GNU public license, take a bit of time to read it. When your ready and agree to the GNU license for Joomla 1.5, click next.
On the next Joomla 1.5 install screen you need to take some care. Here you will see that database type is set to MySQL. Leave that. In the next option put "localhost" (without the quotes - as shown). In the next box, you need to put the user you just setup when setting up the database. Remember to add you Hostmonster user name first and then the underscore eg: hostmonsteruser_newdatabaseuser confused?, don't be, remember your Hostmonster user name is (more than likely) the first 8 characters of you main domain name.
In the example above it would be youtukan_newdatabaseuser (where newdatabaseuser is the name that was set up through cPanel earlier, remember, I told you to take a note of it).
Then put in your password for that user.
And then the databse name that you just setup. Again with your Hostmonster user name first and an underscore eg: hostmonsteruser_newdatabasename (where newdatabasename is the name that was set up through cPanel earlier).
In other words use the user and database names exactly as they appear through cPanel>MySQL Databases.
When your ready to continue the Joomla 1.5 install, click next.
The next option is FTP configuration. Change the option Enable FTP File system Layer to "yes". Put in your Hostmonster user name and the password for you Hostmonster account.
The next box will depend on where you uploaded Joomla 1.5. If Joomla is in an addon domain (one that has a folder inside home/maindomain/public_html) then you should enter public_html, then the domain name of the Joomla 1.5 install you are doing. Eg:
If you install Joomla 1.5 in you main domain, this would just be:
The last Joomla 1.5 install step is easy:
Name your site
Put in the email address you want to use when someone sends emails to the site through the contact form on the site.
Put in the password you want for the administrator of the site (by default in Joomla this user is called admin)
Note: The password has nothing to do with the email address. Put a new password in here for the administrator of the Joomla site.
Leave Install default sample data check (unless you doing a migration to Joomla 1.5) and click next.
A box will appear. This is just to say there is no sample data to install. It just means when you site is finished it will be empty of content. Its up to you to put content in. Click ok.
You should be greeted with a message saying the Joomla 1.5 install is finished.
Well done your almost finished the Joomla 1.5 install on your Hostmonster account.
The last step before you access the finished Joomla 1.5 site for the first time is to clean up the Joomla 1.5 installation files. Log in to your Hostmonster account and use the file manager to find the installation folder inside the folder for the site you just made. In the cPanel, under the section heading "files" click "filemanager". A dialog box will pop up click to toggle (put a dot in) the option "Document Root for:" and then select you your new Joomla 1.5 site from the drop down menu.
Once file manager starts up (opens in a new tab), just click on the box nest to the installation folder (to put a tick in it) and click the red X for delete. A dialog box will pop up to confirm. Don't worry, if you made it through the installation without any problems, its safe to delete this folder. Click "delete file(s)".
Brilliant! Your Joomla 1.5 installation on Hostmonster is now complete. You can now put the URL of your site into any browser and see what the default Joomla 1.5 template looks like.
To add content to you Joomla site, simply put /administrator after the normal URL into your browser (and login with Joomla 1.5 administrator password you entered earlier) like so: www.your-new-joomla 1.5-site.com/administrator
