How to force iPhoto to refresh the thumbnail image of a photo edited in an external program.

Rebuild Photo Library iPhoto dialogue

if you want to recreate thumbnails after you have edited them in a program other than iPhoto (I use Photoshop) it probably means there are three main things you could be asking..

1) How do I make iPhoto automatically refresh the thumbnails if I use an external editor?
2) I just edited a photo in (say) photoshop but iPhoto sill has the old thumbnail, how do I update it)
3) There are photos in my library with outdate thumbnails, how do I get iPhoto to update them.

Here how:

How do I make iPhoto automatically refresh the thumbnails if I use an external editor?

1) Go to iPhoto/preferences,
2) Under general, where you see "edit photo", click "in application" to change this to your external editor. After this thumbnails should automatically update in iPhoto

iPhoto preferences

I just edited a photo in (say) photoshop but iPhoto sill has the old thumbnail, how do I update it)?

1) Click on your photo in iPhoto
2) Click the edit icon
3) Make a change (I use "enhance" because it only requires one click)
4) Undo the change

Normally this will work, but I'm not sure about all version of iPhoto.

If it does not work, try the next option:

There are photos in my library with outdate thumbnails, how do I get iPhoto to update them?

1) Hold Command+Option when you click iPhoto to start it. You should be presented with a dialogue box with various options, among those is rebuilding thumbnails.
2) Select the options you want and click: ****** Warning, the more photos you have and options you select the longer it can take. With all options selected and only a few thousand photos, it took over an hour for iPhoto on my (admitedly old) Mac to rebuild everything.
